Over the past decade, and now heading into its 11th year, The Children’s Flight has grown into one of South Africa’s most remarkable community-driven aviation initiatives, bringing together the aviation sector and the wider business community to give underprivileged children the chance to experience the privilege, excitement and wonder of flight.

There has already been strong momentum behind the 2026 edition. Much of the groundwork has been firmly put in place, with Krugersdorp Flying Club confirmed as the facility sponsor, a substantial list of aircraft sponsors already committed, and key operational support in place through emergency medical response, fire protection, security and HEMS backing. Beyond the flying itself, the day is also being shaped into a fuller experience for the children, with commentary, a radio outside broadcast, live entertainment, opening ceremony elements and a broad media presence all helping to bring the event to life.

With just a month to go, however, a final push is still needed to ensure this year’s event is as successful as it deserves to be. While significant support has already been received, several important elements still require backing to help complete the experience for the children and ensure the day runs smoothly from start to finish.

Items still requiring support include:

  • airshow equipment costs
  • event video production
  • CAA administrative fees
  • tables and chairs
  • water and soft drinks
  • fruit and pizza
  • blankets
  • pencil and stationery sets
  • sunscreen
  • colouring books
  • portable lavatories
  • jumping castles
  • popcorn, candy floss and slush puppies
  • entertainment such as clowns and face painters.

In addition, fundraising for the event T-shirts is nearing its target, with R108,100 already raised and a further R31,900 still needed to reach the manufacturing goal.

Although The Children’s Flight is rooted in aviation, not every contribution needs to come from within the industry itself. One of the most encouraging aspects of the 2026 build-up has been the extent to which support has already come from beyond the airfield, with contributions ranging from food, refreshments and children’s gifts to tents, staging, sound, fencing, branding and other practical event infrastructure. It is this blend of aviation and non-aviation support that helps transform the occasion into far more than a day of flying alone.

That is precisely why the remaining needs matter. Whether support comes in the form of refreshments, children’s activity items, event services, practical infrastructure or direct financial assistance, each contribution helps complete the bigger picture and plays a part in creating an experience these children will never forget.

This is far more than simply a day at the airfield. It is a community effort built on generosity, teamwork and heart — and with the final few gaps still needing to be filled, there remains an opportunity for businesses and individuals alike to play a meaningful role in helping The Children’s Flight 2026 soar.

How you can help The Children’s Flight 2026

With many of the major operational elements already in place, support is now needed to cover the final practical and experience-based items that help make the day special for the children. Contributions do not need to come from within aviation alone — businesses and individuals from any sector can assist through sponsorship, product support, services, or financial contributions towards the remaining event needs.
