In 2024, Continental launched a new training initiative to bring piston engine training to shops and mechanics around the world. Stepping outside of the factory in Mobile, Alabama, USA, the dedicated team of engine experts set out to educate attendees on engine systems, design features, and share best maintenance practices. The first multi-level course was held in South Africa last year and was so well received that Continental returned to Lanseria International Airport to train a new group of mechanics and aviation enthusiasts.
Partnering with Absolute Aviation, Continental transformed a part of the facility into a dynamic classroom, sharing years of firsthand experience and technical insight through a two-week curriculum. Led by James Foster, Product Support Engineer, and supported by Marius Voges, Territory Support Representative for Africa, the training aimed to deepen the group’s technical expertise while sharing key updates such as a streamlined stock engine program, shorter lead times on popular engine models, and a redesigned website that features new tools like the refreshed illustrated parts catalogue (IPC).
AvGas Level 1 Training

The first week of Level 1 piston engine training focused on creating a strong foundation to equip technicians, mechanics, and maintenance professionals with a thorough understanding of Continental’s engine design. Intended as both an introduction and a refresher, the course built steadily from one day to the next. Studies began with a brief history of Continental, followed by key terminology, website navigation, and engine identification. Participants progressed to engine components such as the crankcase and drive train, followed by sessions on the starter adapter, approved oils and lubricants, and cylinders. Later in the week, the group continued their journey through the engine and explored the ignition system, turbocharging and fuel injection.
AvGas Level 2 Training
After successfully passing Level 1, the group remained onsite for hands-on training and instruction. During the 4 days of Level 2 training, participants stepped out of the classroom and into the hangar at the Lanseria International Airport. Level 2 challenged technicians as they took theory and applied it to advanced troubleshooting, diagnostics, and maintenance techniques. The attendees started by disassembling an O-470 and an IO-550, making sure to perform all necessary maintenance inspections.
After a comprehensive inspection of the cylinders, complete with a compression test, borescope inspection, removal of the cylinder, crankcase and ignition system inspection, the group closed out the training by performing inspections on the remaining components, including the alternator, fuel system, and magnetos. By week’s end, both engines were carefully reassembled, pre-oiled, and passed the fuel system setup process.
At the end of the course, each individual was awarded a signed factory training certificate, recognising their successful completion of both Level 1 and Level 2 instruction. More than a credential, it marked their commitment to safety, excellence, and continued growth within aviation.
While the engine workshop is designed to impart technical knowledge and practical wisdom to its participants, the exchange is far from one-sided. The Continental team left equally inspired, having gained valuable insight from the attendees representing countries such as Zimbabwe, Uganda, Kenya, and Namibia. Their feedback helps shape future training and strengthens Continental’s connection to the general aviation community.
