Gabon’s Makokou Airport Modernisation Project Update

As part of the Makokou Airport modernisation project, a multidisciplinary mission led by the Minister of Transport and Merchant Marine, Jonathan IGNOUMBA, visited the site on 17 March 2025. The delegation included several actors in the Gabonese aeronautics sector, including ANAC, ASECNA, BEIAA, ONSFAG, as well as the control mission of the Taskforce and GSEZ-AIRPORT.

The main objective was to assess the recently rehabilitated infrastructure and ensure that it complies with the standards in force. A presentation of the virtual models of the old and new terminal provided a detailed view of the project, which is part of the concession agreement signed between the Gabonese State and GSEZ-AIRPORT in August 2023.

Launched on 15 March 2024, the project was structured in 11 stages, including the renovation of the buildings, the upgrading of the facilities and the improvement of user comfort. Among the major achievements are:

  • The installation of firefighting equipment.
  • The construction of a new terminal.
  • The construction of a secure fence.

During the visit, several urgent actions were identified to ensure the airport’s full operationality. The Minister stressed the importance of quickly completing the final adjustments to allow the safe resumption of flights.
