Gabriel Semelas, President for Africa and the Middle East at Airbus, addressed guests and aviation stakeholders at an event held to mark Airbus Helicopters’ 30 years of service and innovation in Southern Africa. The ceremony also marked the official opening of a new Customer Support Centre dedicated to commercial aircraft in Johannesburg.

Airbus’ relationship with Africa began in November 1976 with the delivery of an A300 to South African Airways, making the continent Airbus’s first international market. Today, nearly 40 airlines across Africa operate more than 260 Airbus aircraft, including the A350, A330neo, A320neo and A220. These aircraft support long-term connectivity and passenger service across the continent.

Airbus Helicopters has maintained a presence in Southern Africa for three decades. Over 500 Airbus helicopters are in service across Africa, supporting emergency medical services, law enforcement, anti-poaching operations, and infrastructure inspections.

In addition to its civil aviation activities, Airbus Defence and Space has delivered nearly 100 military and tactical aircraft to 20 African countries. These assets are used for border protection, humanitarian aid, peacekeeping missions, and national development. Airbus also provides Earth observation and satellite solutions to support agriculture, water management, infrastructure development, and climate monitoring.

Airbus continues to engage with over 180 African suppliers, contributing more than USD 1 billion annually to its global supply chain. Programmes such as #Africa4Future and Airbus BizLab promote local innovation, while the Airbus Foundation supports humanitarian and STEM education initiatives.

The new Johannesburg-based Customer Support Centre reinforces Airbus’s long-term commitment to Africa’s aviation sector. The company’s focus remains on partnerships, skills development, and expanding connectivity across the continent.

“We are not just selling aircraft, helicopters, space or military assets; we are investing in partnerships, fostering skills, and building capacity across the continent. Our aim is to continue driving connectivity, resilience, and shared growth, contributing to a prosperous and interconnected Africa.” – Gabriel Semelas, President, Africa and Middle East, Airbus
