A progress meeting of the Aircraft Accident Investigation Team was recently held at the CASSOA Centre for Aviation Medicine in Nairobi, attended by Mr Liban Shire, Director of the Somali Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB).
The team, established through Gazette Notice No. 6257 by the Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport, is tasked with reviewing aircraft accidents that have occurred in the Federal Republic of Somalia and the Republic of South Sudan over the past five years. During the meeting, discussions with Mr Shire covered recent incidents involving Kenyan-registered aircraft in Somalia, examining the circumstances of each occurrence to support the ongoing review process.
A key outcome of the session was the proposal to establish a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Somali AAIB and the Kenyan Aircraft Accident Investigation Department (AAID). The MoU would formalise cooperation between the two agencies, enabling enhanced coordination and seamless collaboration in the investigation of future aviation incidents and accidents. The objective is to strengthen investigative capacity and contribute to improved aviation safety across the region.
