On the sidelines of the 38th Ordinary Assembly of the African Union, the Honourable Nancy Tembo MP, Minister of Foreign Affairs, formally submitted an Instrument of Acceptance and Solemn Declaration on the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM) to the African Union Commission (AUC).

The Instrument, endorsed by His Excellency Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, President of Malawi, on 6 November 2024, was presented to the AUC through H.E. Amani Abou-Zeid, Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy.

During the ceremony, the Honourable Nancy Tembo reaffirmed Malawi’s commitment to liberalising the air transport market, a crucial factor in enhancing connectivity across Africa and achieving the objectives of two AU Agenda 2063 Flagship Projects: the Single African Air Transport Market and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

In response, Commissioner Amani Abou-Zeid congratulated Malawi on its significant progress in air market liberalisation and highlighted the technical support Malawi would receive from the AU in this process. She also expressed her gratitude and appreciation to His Excellency the President of Malawi for his unwavering commitment to promoting the liberalisation of air transport.
