Uganda CAA Hosts Aviation Weather Awareness Workshop

The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA), in partnership with the Department of Meteorological Services (DMS) under the Ministry of Water and Environment, hosted the Aviation Weather Awareness Workshop at the Imperial Golf View Hotel, Entebbe, from 14–15 August 2025.

The two-day event brought together delegates from the Uganda National Meteorological Authority, representatives of airlines, aviation professionals, and other stakeholders to strengthen collaboration and improve weather preparedness.

UCAA Director General, Mr. Fred K. Bamwesigye, highlighted the critical role of accurate, timely, and reliable weather information in aviation safety and operational efficiency. He noted that aircraft movements had increased from 21,584 in 2021 to 32,552 in 2024, emphasising the need for enhanced safety measures.

Commissioner for Meteorology, Dr. Bob Alex Ogwang, stressed the importance of integrating weather data into operational decision-making. He shared updates on Uganda’s meteorological capabilities, including weather radars, wind shear detection systems, satellite imagery, and improved forecasting models.

The workshop covered inter-agency collaboration, aviation weather mandates, accurate forecasting, safety protocols, and advancements in monitoring tools. Practical sessions were held to develop strategies for applying weather information more effectively in aviation operations.
