During the Land-Linked Zambia Conference, African Pilot Magazine editor Phillippa Dean had a quick catch-up with Engineer Geoffrey F. Magwede, Director of Railway Services from Malawi’s Ministry of Transport and Public Works, who also shared insights into Malawi’s aviation sector.
Engineer Magwede discusses positive developments, including the operational improvements at Chileka International Airport and Kamuzu International Airport. He confirms that Mzuzu Airport has been upgraded with an extended runway, now capable of handling larger aircraft, enabling travel to and from Mzuzu.
He also provides updates on Karonga International Airport, located in the far north of Malawi, which is close to Mbeya in Tanzania. Karonga Airport is set to open for more regular traffic, with current private aviation activities supporting the growing mining sector in the region.
These aviation developments are expected to enhance connectivity within Malawi and with neighbouring countries, supporting both economic growth and regional trade.
