Zambia and Eswatini Sign Bilateral Air Services Agreement

Zambia and the Kingdom of Eswatini have formalised a Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA), paving the way for the introduction of direct commercial flights between the two countries. The agreement was signed on the sidelines of the 10th Africa and Indian Ocean Aviation Week 2025, held in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.

The signing marks a significant step in strengthening bilateral cooperation in the aviation sector and signals a shared commitment to enhancing regional air connectivity. The agreement follows high-level engagement between the Heads of State of both countries and reflects broader continental efforts to boost intra-African trade and travel.

The initiative supports the objectives of the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC) and aligns with the African Union Commission’s drive to fully operationalise the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM). By embracing liberalisation of air services, both Zambia and Eswatini are contributing to the vision of a more integrated and economically vibrant Africa.

Eswatini’s Ministry of Public Works and Transport has indicated plans to launch the first direct commercial flight to Zambia by September, with preparatory visits scheduled for June. The move is expected to facilitate trade and mobility between citizens of both nations, particularly given the active Zambian business community in Eswatini.

The agreement has been welcomed by regional aviation stakeholders, including AFCAC leadership, who highlighted its alignment with Agenda 2063 and the African Union’s goal of free movement of people. The development also supports Zambia’s strategic ambition of becoming a regional transport and aviation hub.
