The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) recently marked its 39th anniversary with a commemorative event held at its headquarters at Kotoka International Airport, underscoring its enduring commitment to aviation safety, innovation, and regulatory excellence.
Since its formal establishment in 1986 under PNDC Law 151, the GCAA has evolved into a cornerstone of Ghana’s aviation sector. This year’s celebration served not only to reflect on decades of progress but to outline the Authority’s future priorities and strategic initiatives.
At the forefront is a key structural reform aimed at separating the GCAA’s regulatory functions from air navigation services. This planned decoupling will lead to the creation of an autonomous Air Navigation Services Provider (ANSP), enabling the Authority to sharpen its focus on regulation while enhancing service efficiency. An internal committee has been tasked with finalising a report for submission to the Ministry of Transport, signalling momentum in the implementation of this reform.
Progress on critical infrastructure was also highlighted, with the construction of a state-of-the-art air traffic control tower currently underway. Scheduled for completion in 2026, the tower will be equipped with advanced technology and is expected to significantly enhance air traffic management capacity in line with international standards.
As part of efforts to strengthen internal cohesion and boost performance, the GCAA is advancing a staff empowerment strategy themed “No Staff Left Behind.” The initiative promotes inclusivity, workplace discipline, and career development through a six-point organisational culture plan that includes fair disciplinary practices, professional growth opportunities, and employee recognition.
Additionally, the GCAA reiterated its support for Ghana’s national objective of becoming a regional aviation hub. By aligning its operations with the broader goals of the government, the Authority continues to play a vital role in shaping the sub-region’s air transport landscape.
With a renewed focus on innovation, infrastructure development, and institutional strengthening, the GCAA is poised to build on its legacy and advance Ghana’s position in global aviation.
