The World Bank Group has approved $200 million in financing for the Madagascar Multimodal Transport and Logistics Project, which includes aviation sector upgrades as part of a wider programme to improve the efficiency, safety and climate resilience of transport infrastructure along Madagascar’s key economic corridors.
In the aviation sector, the project will finance safety, security and climate resilience upgrades at regional airports in Toamasina, Fort Dauphin and Tulear. These upgrades are intended to help maintain domestic connectivity, support tourism, and ensure reliable access for emergency response and disaster relief operations.
The project is expected to benefit passengers and tourism-dependent communities through safer and more reliable regional air transport, while strengthening supply chains and connectivity in cyclone-prone regions.
The programme also places emphasis on strengthening institutions responsible for managing airport infrastructure, improving safety oversight and modernising sector governance. According to the supplied copy, this forms part of an integrated approach to strengthening Madagascar’s transport system across roads, railways, ports, waterways and airports.
