Sumbawanga Airport to Drive Development

Sumbawanga Airport officially commenced operations on 24 April 2026, with Tanzania’s Deputy Minister of Transport saying the airport will support connectivity, economic growth and development opportunities in Rukwa Region.

The launch of Sumbawanga Airport has been described as a catalyst for economic development in Rukwa Region and surrounding areas, following its official commencement of operations on April 24, 2026.

Launching the airport on behalf of the Minister of Transport, His Excellency Prof. Makame Mbarawa, Deputy Minister of Transport, David Kihenzile, said the Government will continue to invest in air transport infrastructure to improve services, connect regions and increase economic opportunities for citizens.

Deputy Minister Kihenzile added that the move demonstrates the Government’s commitment to ensuring access to quality transport services while opening up areas with various development opportunities, adding that the airport will stimulate economic growth in the region and the nation as a whole.

For his part, the Director General of the Tanzania Airports Authority (TAA), Abdul Mombokaleo, said the construction of the airport has cost 62.1 billion shillings and includes essential infrastructure, including a runway, a passenger terminal with the capacity to handle up to 150,000 passengers per year, as well as air conditioning services.

ATCL Director General, Engineer Peter Ulanga, said the company is planning to start flights twice a week in the region, a move that will facilitate passenger and cargo transport as well as promote trade, tourism and investment.

Delivering regional greetings, the Acting Regional Commissioner of Rukwa who is the Regional Administrative Secretary, Mr. Msalike Makungu, said the launch of the stadium will open up great economic opportunities and stimulate social development for the people of the area.
