Private flights have resumed at Karonga International Airport following an inspection by Malawi’s Deputy Minister of Transport and Public Works, Peter Dimba MP. On 5 February, an Embraer 120 chartered by Lotus from Johannesburg landed at Karonga, making a refuelling stop at Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) before returning.
Scheduled commercial flights by Malawi Airlines to Karonga remain on hold, pending the completion of the runway extension at Mzuzu Airport, which is 95% complete. This extension is critical for ensuring the commercial viability of these routes.
This development is a significant step forward for Malawi’s aviation sector.
