During the Land-Linked Zambia Conference, African Pilot Magazine editor Phillippa Dean had a quick catch-up with Engineer Geoffrey F. Magwede, Director of Railway Services from Malawi’s Ministry of Transport and Public Works, who also shared insights into Malawi’s aviation sector.
Engineer Magwede discusses positive developments, including the operational improvements at Chileka International Airport and Kamuzu International Airport. He confirms that Mzuzu Airport has been upgraded with an extended runway, now capable of handling larger aircraft, enabling travel to and from Mzuzu.
He also provides updates on Karonga International Airport, located in the far north of Malawi, which is close to Mbeya in Tanzania. Karonga Airport is set to open for more regular traffic, with current private aviation activities supporting the growing mining sector in the region.
These aviation developments are expected to enhance connectivity within Malawi and with neighbouring countries, supporting both economic growth and regional trade.
Tanzania Boosts Air Tanzania Fleet and Advances Airport Construction Projects
During the Land-Linked Zambia Conference, African Pilot Magazine editor Phillippa Dean had a quick catch-up with Tanzania’s Minister of Works and Transport, Hon. Prof. Makame Mbarawa, to discuss developments in Tanzania’s aviation sector.
Hon. Mbarawa highlights the impressive strides made by Air Tanzania, which has purchased 16 new aircraft over the past five years without leasing. The airline has expanded its international network to Guangzhou (China), Mumbai (India), Dubai (UAE), as well as regional destinations including Lusaka (Zambia), Lubumbashi (DR Congo), Nairobi (Kenya), Moroni (Comoros), Johannesburg (South Africa), with new routes to Kinshasa (DR Congo) and Lagos (Nigeria) planned. There are also possible plans to lease additional aircraft.
Beyond aviation operations, the Minister shares updates on the construction of seven new airports across Tanzania, including major progress at Msalato International Airport (currently 94% complete), developments at Tabora, Sumbawanga, Shinyanga, and the construction of passenger terminals at Mtwara and Lindi, among other projects.

South African Air Force to Host Museum Air Show Celebrating Aviation Legacy
The South African Air Force has announced that the 14th Annual South African Air Force Museum Air Show will take place on Saturday, 3 May 2025, at the Air Force Mobile Deployment Wing in Pretoria. Under the theme “Wings of Legacy – Advancing Towards Space and Future Frontiers,” the event will showcase the evolution of military aviation through static and flying displays, featuring historic and modern aircraft.
Highlights include aerobatic performances, static exhibitions, and the participation of both military and civilian aviation sectors.
Preceding the air show are a race between a Gautrain and an Alouette II helicopter on 30 April and a Youth Development Programme for 25 invited schools on 2 May.
Tickets are available via Computicket or at the gate, with a Gautrain Park and Ride service offered from Centurion Station.

Boeing Expands Presence in Africa with New Addis Ababa Office
Boeing has opened a new regional office in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to serve as its administrative hub in Africa. This move reinforces Boeing’s 75-year legacy on the continent and strengthens its commitment to supporting Africa’s growing aerospace sector. The new office will bring Boeing closer to its over 60 airline customers and enhance partnerships, safety standards, and the development of the aviation industry.
Henok Teferra Shawl, appointed Managing Director of Boeing Africa, will lead the office. Boeing’s presence in Africa also includes an office in Johannesburg and field service representatives in eight countries. The company collaborates closely with African airlines to modernise fleets, improve operational efficiency, and align regulatory standards, working with organisations such as AFRAA and ICAO.
Beyond commercial aviation, Boeing supports defence partnerships in countries like Cameroon, Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, and Tunisia. Its ongoing investment includes $22 million since 2008 for education and economic empowerment initiatives, and $40 million in supplier partnerships across Ethiopia, Morocco, and South Africa. Today, Boeing aircraft account for nearly 70% of Africa’s commercial fleet.
AviLease Secures $1.5 Billion Revolving Credit Facility
AviLease, the global aircraft lessor based in Saudi Arabia, has closed a $1.5 billion unsecured revolving credit facility (RCF), significantly oversubscribed with commitments from 20 leading international banks, including eight new partners from Europe, Asia, and North America.
This new facility, combined with an existing $750 million revolver, brings AviLease’s total immediately available committed facilities to $2.25 billion. CEO Edward O’Byrne stated that the strengthened liquidity supports the company’s continued expansion into next-generation, fuel-efficient aircraft while maintaining a conservative financial strategy.
Zambia Deepens Aviation Partnership with China as Mansa Airport Upgrade Progresses
The Zambian Minister of Transport and Logistics, Hon. Museba Frank Tayali, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transforming Zambia into a regional aviation hub. This follows ongoing progress on the Mansa Airport upgrade, undertaken in partnership with China Jiangsu International.
During a meeting with China Jiangsu’s Chairman, Mr. Som Qinbo, Hon. Tayali praised the long-standing relationship between Zambia and China, referencing historical projects like the TAZARA Railway. He emphasised the importance of resilient infrastructure for Africa’s growth and Zambia’s strategic ambition to strengthen its air connectivity.
The Mansa Airport project, valued at K740 million and set for completion within 17 months, currently stands at 7% progress. Hon. Tayali commended China Jiangsu for mobilising work despite funding delays and assured continued engagement to expedite payments and environmental approvals.
The government reiterated its focus on prudent resource management and committed to closely monitoring the project to ensure timely and cost-effective delivery, contributing to enhanced provincial air connectivity and regional integration.
Air Legends Foundation bringing ‘Flight of the Cats’ to EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2025

The West Coast Saldanha Airshow
Now in its third year, the West Coast Airshow, held at Saldanha Airport, 140km north of Cape Town, promised a fantastic variety of displays for the event on Saturday, 22 March. During its first two years, the airshow was held at the end of September or early October, with wet and dreary weather hindering flying during the 2023 edition. With that in mind, the organisers decided to move the event to much earlier in the year in a bid to avoid the wet and rainy season that the Western Cape is prone to during the winter months, which sometimes spills over into the beginning of spring, as happened in 2023.
