ONDA (National Airports Office) is launching the construction of a new terminal at Mohammed V Airport in Casablanca, designed as a HUB. Unique in its concept, this project is part of the “Airports 2030” strategy and is a remarkable technical achievement reflecting Morocco’s new ambitions. With a capacity of 20 million passengers annually, the terminal is scheduled to be operational in 2029, with an estimated investment of 15 billion dirhams.

The new terminal represents a major infrastructure project and an architectural masterpiece, marking an unprecedented transformation in Morocco’s airport sector. Its design is inspired by the waves of the Atlantic Ocean. Shaped like an “H”, this ambitious terminal is designed to meet international hub standards, especially in connection times, baggage handling, and efficient use of boarding bridges. It also anticipates future air traffic growth, particularly aligned with the expansion of Royal Air Maroc.

The terminal will be connected to the high-speed rail (LGV) line between Kenitra and Marrakech, providing travellers with rapid and seamless access to Morocco’s major cities. Similar to major international hubs like Paris-Charles de Gaulle, London-Heathrow, and Hong Kong International, the terminal aims to enhance multimodal connectivity and improve the passenger experience. The rail connection will significantly reduce travel times between Casablanca and other key areas while supporting air traffic growth by easing airport access.

The project also includes a new 3,700 m x 45 m parallel runway with taxiways and associated aeronautical infrastructure; aircraft parking areas; and a new air traffic control tower, approximately 42 metres tall.

The terminal will feature three main levels and offer an entirely reimagined passenger experience—enhancing mobility, comfort, and service. It will include green spaces, shopping areas, a large duty-free zone, VIP lounges, and an on-site hotel, all offering panoramic views of the runways.

Construction tenders will be issued in the coming months, with the earthworks tender already launched. The terminal’s completion is expected by 2029.

With this landmark project, ONDA reaffirms its commitment to meeting Morocco’s evolving transport needs, especially in preparation for the 2030 FIFA World Cup. The terminal forms a cornerstone of the “Airports 2030” strategy and marks a major advancement in airport infrastructure, reinforcing Morocco’s position as a strategic global hub.

A True Architectural Manifesto

Inspiration: A Terminal as the Gateway to the Atlantic

Designed as an architectural manifesto, the new Casablanca terminal draws its inspiration from the natural forces of the Atlantic Ocean. Its flowing, curved lines echo the power and grace of ocean waves, symbolising the balance between strength and serenity. The terminal reflects the vision of a “Morocco, Gateway to the Atlantic,” with expansive open spaces inspired by the limitless Atlantic horizon, affirming Morocco’s strategic role in global connectivity.

Culture: A Celebration of Moroccan Identity

More than just an infrastructure project, the terminal is a gateway to Morocco and a contemporary expression of its diverse cultural identity. Its architecture draws from Moroccan tradition: Andalusian geometric motifs, Berber carpets from the Atlas Mountains, and elegant arches from historic medinas blend into a harmonious and forward-thinking vision.

Green Spaces: Oases and Palms for a Calm Pause

Gardens play a central role in the terminal’s design. By incorporating two landscaped green zones in the form of oases, ONDA aims to offer travellers a modern and immersive experience that honours Morocco’s natural heritage. These serene spaces contrast with the modern architectural design and offer passengers a peaceful environment to relax before or after a flight.

Materials: An Ode to Traditional Moroccan Architecture

The terminal’s roof is a true architectural masterpiece. The design of the soffit overhangs is inspired by bejmat (traditional terracotta tiles) and features a hexagonal pattern in ochre, paying tribute to Morocco’s southern provinces. The use of terracotta zellige tiles adds warmth and texture, subtly contrasting with the terminal’s modern design.
