Airbus U030 Flexrotor Brings Persistent Surveillance to Remote African Operations

The Airbus U030 Flexrotor offers African defence forces, coast guards and border authorities a new approach to persistent surveillance across remote regions. Combining vertical take-off with fixed-wing endurance.

Surveillance aircraft in Africa are often required to work a long way from the nearest runway, hangar or maintenance base. The borders, coastlines, conservation areas and infrastructure corridors that need to be monitored may cover hundreds of kilometres, with few suitable places from which to operate.

The Airbus U030 Flexrotor is designed for this type of work. It combines vertical take-off and landing with the endurance of a fixed-wing uncrewed aircraft and can be fitted with different sensor payloads according to the mission.

With a maximum take-off weight of 25 kg, Flexrotor can operate from an area measuring only 3.7 by 3.7 metres. It takes off vertically, transitions into wing-borne flight and can remain airborne for more than 12 hours.

The operating team needs neither a runway nor a launch catapult, recovery net or conventional flight deck. This gives defence forces, coast guards, border authorities and emergency services a way to place sensors close to the area being monitored without committing a helicopter or larger crewed aircraft to hours of observation.

The U030 Flexrotor will form part of the Airbus capability presentation at Africa Aerospace and Defence AAD 2026.  

Long Endurance from a 25 kg Aircraft

Airbus generally quotes an operational endurance of 12 to 14 hours. Its current technical information gives a range of 12 to 15 hours, depending on the payload, operating conditions and mission profile.

This is possible because Flexrotor does not hover throughout the mission. After taking off vertically, it moves into forward flight and uses its three-metre wing to generate lift more efficiently.

A single sortie can cover much of a working day along a border, over a maritime area, above a wildfire or alongside remote infrastructure. Its published dash speed of 140 km/h allows the aircraft to move between areas of interest before slowing to a more efficient surveillance speed.

Multirotor drones remain useful for local inspection and short-range imagery, but their endurance is normally more limited. Flexrotor sits between these smaller systems and larger tactical UAS platforms that may require runways, launch equipment or more substantial operating teams.

Its dimensions also suit expeditionary operations. Airbus gives a box-to-flight time of approximately 30 minutes at a previously used operating location. The system can move with the unit or agency conducting the mission instead of remaining tied to a permanent airfield.

Carrying the Sensor the Mission Requires

Flexrotor can carry up to 8 kg of payload. Different sensors and communications equipment can be installed according to what the operator would need the aircraft to do.

Airbus says more than 100 payload types have been considered or accommodated. These include electro-optical and infrared cameras, radar, wide-area imaging systems, communications relay equipment and electronic or signals-intelligence systems.

They cannot all be carried at once. Payload weight, electrical demand, available space and the effect on endurance must be balanced against the requirements of each mission.

For conventional surveillance, an electro-optical and infrared payload can provide daytime imagery and thermal information after dark. Radar can help detect a moving target or vessel before the optical sensor is directed towards the contact for closer inspection.

This combination is already being used operationally. In July 2026, the U030 Flexrotor began maritime-surveillance missions for the European Maritime Safety Agency in the Baltic, providing electro-optical, infrared and radar information to participating authorities. The operation supports search and rescue, fisheries control, environmental monitoring and the detection of illicit maritime activity.

Although this deployment is in Europe, the work will be familiar to African states responsible for fisheries protection, maritime security, environmental monitoring and search and rescue across large offshore areas.

Extending Surveillance from Smaller Vessels

At sea, Flexrotor’s small operating footprint allows it to work from vessels that do not have a conventional flight deck or helicopter hangar.

A patrol vessel’s onboard sensors are restricted by their height above the water and the distance to the horizon. Launching a UAS allows the crew to place radar or electro-optical equipment at altitude, extending surveillance beyond the ship’s immediate field of view.

During the REPMUS 2025 exercise, Flexrotor launched and recovered from a Portuguese patrol vessel, completed missions lasting more than ten hours and transmitted video into the wider command system. Airbus reported operations in gusting winds of up to 25 knots, as well as in precipitation, mist, darkness and a congested electromagnetic environment.

For African navies and coast guards, a system of this size could place long-endurance airborne surveillance aboard vessels that cannot accommodate a helicopter. Its missions could include monitoring illegal fishing, locating suspicious vessels, supporting anti-smuggling operations, observing offshore infrastructure and searching for people or vessels in distress.

Flexrotor does not replace a maritime patrol aircraft or helicopter. It extends the information available to the ship and can help direct more capable crewed aircraft towards a confirmed contact or search area.

Watching Africa’s Borders and Remote Infrastructure

Many African land borders cross deserts, mountains, dense vegetation and sparsely populated regions. Maintaining continuous coverage with crewed aircraft is difficult, while ground patrols may need several hours to reach an incident.

Flexrotor can be transported to a remote operating position and launched without an airstrip. Once airborne, it can monitor routes, border crossings, vehicles, people and activity around isolated posts over an extended period.

Fitted with suitable communications equipment, the aircraft could also relay radio traffic between teams separated by terrain or distance. Placing a communications node at altitude extends line-of-sight coverage where terrestrial infrastructure is unavailable, damaged or beyond the reach of ground equipment.

Airbus identifies power lines, railways and pipelines among the platform’s potential surveillance applications. In Africa, the same capability could be applied to remote mining operations, oil and gas facilities, electricity corridors, roads, ports and telecommunications infrastructure.

Instead of inspecting one location at a time, the aircraft can follow an infrastructure corridor and collect imagery across a much larger area during a single sortie.

Supporting Search, Rescue and Disaster Response

Long-endurance surveillance is particularly useful when the location of a missing person, vessel or aircraft is unknown.

A UAS can begin searching before a helicopter reaches the area, examine terrain or water ahead of rescue crews and continue observing while other aircraft return to refuel. Thermal sensors may assist after dark or where a person is difficult to distinguish from the surrounding terrain.

In January 2026, a Flexrotor operated with a Republic of Singapore Air Force H225M during a simulated search-and-rescue mission. The UAS transmitted real-time information to the helicopter crew through Airbus’s HTeaming system.

Following floods, cyclones or other disasters, Flexrotor could assist with route reconnaissance, flood mapping, damage assessment and the identification of isolated communities. A communications payload could also help connect response teams when terrestrial networks are unavailable.

Wildfire surveillance presents a different task. Flexrotor does not carry water or retardant, but can provide live optical and infrared imagery of the fire front, remaining hotspots and the position of response crews. Helicopters and fixed-wing firefighting aircraft can then be directed towards the areas where their loads are most urgently required.

Conservation and Environmental Monitoring

Large wildlife reserves are difficult to patrol continuously, particularly after dark or during fire season. Airbus includes wildlife observation among the potential applications for Flexrotor.

With an appropriate electro-optical or infrared sensor, the aircraft could support wildlife counts, track animal movements and identify people or vehicles within protected areas. The information could then be passed to conservation teams on the ground.

Airbus states that Flexrotor is inaudible at approximately 500 metres under the conditions used for its product data. The aircraft can also shut down and restart its engine at altitude, allowing periods of quieter observation.

Working Alongside Crewed Aircraft

Within the wider Airbus presentation at AAD, Flexrotor has a different job from the company’s larger crewed aircraft.

The H145M, H175M and H215M can move personnel and equipment, conduct rescue missions and support tactical operations. The C295 provides regional airlift and can carry larger teams and cargo between short or unprepared airfields.

The Flexrotor provides the information needed before the larger aircraft are sent and continue observing while crewed platforms rotate through the operation.

Its sensors can examine a landing area, search a route, locate a vessel, monitor activity around a border post or identify hazards before aircrew arrive. Once the operation is under way, the UAS can remain overhead while helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft, ships or ground teams respond to what it has detected.
