The Akwa Ibom State Government has activated high-speed internet connectivity infrastructure at Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo as part of plans to support the airport’s digital systems and wider aviation operations.

The infrastructure, powered by MainOne, was activated on 8 August 2026 under the state government’s broader investment in digital infrastructure and innovation.

Governor Umo Eno, represented at the activation ceremony by Secretary to the State Government Prince Enobong Uwah, said the project forms part of the administration’s plans to develop a Smart City and establish a digital ecosystem capable of supporting economic activity, security and development.

The state government has increasingly incorporated digital technology into its operations, including the implementation of the Treasury Single Account and the integration of technology into its security architecture.

Commissioner for Science and Digital Economy Dr Frank Ekpenyong said the new high-capacity connectivity would provide the technological backbone needed to support Victor Attah International Airport and its wider aviation ecosystem.

According to Ekpenyong, the state government entered into an agreement with MainOne for the provision of high-speed internet connectivity, with the infrastructure activated at the airport providing multi-gigabit-per-second capacity.

He said the connection links Akwa Ibom to the global digital network through submarine fibre-optic cable infrastructure extending across the Atlantic Ocean. The same infrastructure is expected to support a security surveillance facility being developed by the state government, including real-time monitoring and response capabilities.

MainOne Managing Director for West Africa Wole Abu said the deployment would provide Akwa Ibom with access to high-speed and reliable internet services through the company’s submarine fibre-optic infrastructure.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Aviation and Airport Development Uwem Ekanem said the connectivity was an important component of the continuing development of Victor Attah International Airport.

According to Ekanem, the infrastructure is expected to support passenger services within the terminal while improving operational efficiency across the airport’s aviation ecosystem.

The state government is positioning the digital infrastructure as part of its programme to develop Victor Attah International Airport into a smart international airport.
