Cameroon Launches SAF Feasibility Study

Cameroon has launched a six-month feasibility study to assess the technical, economic and environmental viability of producing sustainable aviation fuel locally, with support from ICAO and the European Union.

Cameroon has launched a feasibility study to assess the country's potential to produce and use sustainable aviation fuel, with the work expected to lead to conclusions within six months on whether a technically, economically and environmentally viable domestic SAF industry could be developed.

The study formally began on 31 August 2026 at a workshop organised jointly by the Cameroon Civil Aviation Authority (CCAA) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), with support from the European Union.

CCAA Director General Paule Avomo Assoumou Koki said the work would examine the conditions under which a national SAF industry could be developed, with the longer-term objective of enabling airlines to source sustainable aviation fuel locally.

The initiative will also consider Cameroon's requirements under the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), while assessing the potential for local value chains associated with SAF production.

Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea are among 12 African pilot states receiving European Union support under the programme. The EU intends to support the development of local and regional value chains covering biomass, conversion technologies, infrastructure and certification.

The initial technical sessions covered regulation, certification, sustainability reporting and SAF lifecycle analysis under CORSIA, together with production pathways, emerging technologies and the mapping of potential local feedstocks.

Following two days of technical discussions, experts and project teams are undertaking 10 days of surveys and site visits to collect data from industrial facilities, agricultural stakeholders and existing infrastructure, including refining capacity.

The fieldwork will examine the actual availability of biomass resources and reusable waste that could potentially support SAF production in Cameroon.

ICAO Environment Director Tetsuya Tanaka and Romain Ekoto, ICAO Regional Director for Western and Central Africa, participated in the work. Ekoto said the success of the feasibility study would depend on active participation by national stakeholders.

The study is being conducted with technical input from ICAO's ACT-SAF project team and consultants. Its conclusions are expected within six months and will determine Cameroon's potential for viable sustainable aviation fuel production, with a view to developing a roadmap aligned with ICAO standards.
