As part of its mandate to provide air navigation services at the country’s secondary airports, the Cameroon Civil Aviation Authority (CCAA) formally received, on 30 June and 3 July 2026, the installation of new equipment for the control towers and technical blocks of Maroua-Salak and Ngaoundéré airports.
The investment is valued at 152.4 million CFA francs. The CCAA states that it strengthens operational efficiency and reinforces sovereignty over northern airspace, in line with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, particularly Annex 10 (Aeronautical Telecommunications) and Annex 14 (Aerodrome Design and Operations).
The technical acceptance was carried out by a specialised mission under the Director General of the CCAA, Paule Avomo Assoumou Koki, and also served as the final commissioning of the equipment. This confirmed its reliability after one year of operation under warranty. The team, led by the Director of Financial and Material Resources, Hervé Goma, and Market Engineer Gilbert Kamto Wambo, validated the systems through check-lists and testing in real conditions.
The inspections covered critical structural elements, including the installation of new pylons, the placement of antennas on the tower roof and the installation of a new technical floor to facilitate maintenance. The modernisation works also included a refurbishment of the working environment, covering ceilings, painting, carpentry, air conditioning and the variable lighting specific to control towers.
The control towers of Maroua-Salak and Ngaoundéré are now equipped with next-generation VHF/HF radios, a digital recording system with GPS time synchronisation, enhanced electrical safety, reinforced security and improved working conditions.
To ensure the sustainability of these assets and the autonomy of personnel, the CCAA has prioritised capacity building through the training of maintenance technicians, as well as instruction for controllers and aeronautical information management staff in the use of the new tools.
The deployment forms part of a wider programme of progressive airport rehabilitation being carried out by the CCAA. Similar works have already been completed at Bafoussam and Bertoua, while further projects are under way at Bamenda and on the perimeter fencing of Garoua Airport, with the objective of consolidating the safety and attractiveness of Cameroon’s airspace.
