Emirates Set to Become the World’s First Autism Certified Airline

Emirates is poised to make aviation history by becoming the world’s first Autism Certified Airline™, reinforcing its commitment to inclusivity and accessibility in air travel. In collaboration with the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES), the airline is undergoing a comprehensive certification process, with more than 30,000 cabin crew and ground staff set to complete specialised training. This initiative will enhance the travel experience for autistic individuals and those with sensory sensitivities, marking a significant milestone in the aviation industry.

Pioneering Accessible Air Travel

Air travel can be particularly challenging for autistic individuals due to heightened sensory stimuli in airport environments and onboard aircraft. According to a survey conducted by AutismTravel.com, 78% of families with autistic members are hesitant to travel, while 94% would take more holidays if they had access to autism-trained staff. Emirates’ initiative aligns with Dubai’s ambition to become the most accessible destination in the world, making global travel a more inclusive experience for all.

Understanding the Autism Certified Airline™ Designation

To achieve this designation, Emirates has partnered with IBCCES to conduct an extensive review and audit of its services. IBCCES gathered insights from over 14,000 individuals with various disabilities, including autistic individuals and their caregivers. These findings, combined with data from an International Air Transport Association (IATA) survey and feedback from 1,200 industry professionals, were instrumental in shaping new service standards. Emirates also participated in flight audits across both short- and long-haul routes to refine its approach.

Specialised Training for Emirates Staff

As part of this initiative, Emirates’ ground staff and cabin crew will undergo intensive autism and sensory-awareness training. This programme will provide employees with an in-depth understanding of autism, common misconceptions, and the challenges faced by neurodiverse travellers. Building on the airline’s existing ‘Introduction to Autism and Hidden Disabilities’ training completed by 23,000 staff in 2023, the new programme will equip personnel with skills to support autistic travellers more effectively and reduce sensory triggers in the travel environment.

New Standards and Services for Autistic Travellers

From 2025 onwards, Emirates will roll out various services to enhance the travel experience for autistic customers. Among these innovations are:

  • Sensory Guides: Digital tools providing detailed information on sensory inputs such as lighting, sound levels, and other environmental factors at Dubai’s airport facilities and on Emirates flights. These guides will help travellers make informed decisions about their journey.
  • Neurodiverse Sensory Products: Items such as fidget toys and sensory aids to help autistic passengers manage stress and self-stimulatory behaviour during flights.

Collaborating for Inclusive Travel

Emirates’ efforts extend beyond its airline services. In April 2024, all four Emirates Check-In facilities in Dubai, including its Terminal 3 hub at Dubai International Airport (DXB), achieved Certified Autism Center™ status. Dubai International Airport itself received this designation in December 2023, making it the first international airport to earn such recognition. These milestones contribute to the Department of Economy and Tourism’s goal of establishing Dubai as the first Certified Autism Destination™ in the Eastern Hemisphere.

By working closely with Dubai Airports, the Department of Economy and Tourism, Dubai Customs, Dubai Police, and the General Directorate of Residency and Foreign Affairs, Emirates is spearheading a movement towards more accessible global travel. This groundbreaking initiative not only reinforces the airline’s reputation for world-class hospitality but also sets a new industry benchmark for inclusive aviation.
