Kabalega International Airport Nears Completion

In November 2024, Uganda’s Ministry of Transport and Works reported that the construction of Kabalega International Airport, a vital infrastructure project for the country’s oil and gas sector, had reached 96% completion, with commissioning scheduled for September 2025. Located in Hoima District, the airport is set to facilitate the transportation of critical equipment needed to support Uganda’s 2025 oil production goals.

The project, undertaken by Israeli-British firms Shikun and Binui International-SBI/Colas Limited, faced delays due to design changes, including the shift from a mobile to a fixed control tower, and the need to finalise essential elements such as electricity, CCTV, and fibre optic installations. Despite these challenges, most major facilities are complete, including a 3.5 km runway, cargo terminal, and passenger terminal.

The Ugandan government has invested 1.08 trillion shillings of the 1.188 trillion allocated for the project, with an additional 76 billion shillings requested to complete the remaining works. The project was also briefly halted in 2023 over funding disputes but resumed after negotiations.

Once operational, the airport will serve as a vital logistical hub for Uganda’s oil, agriculture, and tourism sectors, benefiting the Albertine region and beyond. It is expected to bring economic opportunities to the Bunyoro community, with 90% of the project’s workforce being Ugandan. The government plans to continue training local workers to support future airport operations.

The airport will include:

  • A 3.5 km runway
  • Control tower
  • Cargo and passenger terminals
  • Fire station, taxiways, and navigation systems

Kabalega International Airport is on track to boost Uganda’s oil production ambitions, enhance local infrastructure, and support regional economic growth. Test flights have already met international standards, and the airport is set to be a cornerstone in East Africa’s oil and gas industry.
