Liberia’s Minister of Transport, Honourable Sirleaf Ralph Tyler, has described aviation as the gateway to national development, emphasising the critical role the sector plays in connecting people, driving economic growth, and enhancing global competitiveness.
He made the statement on Monday, 5 May, during a high-profile event marking the commencement of Aviation Awareness Week, organised by the Liberia Civil Aviation Authority (LCAA) at the Ministerial Complex in Monrovia.
Focus on Aviation for National Growth
The occasion brought together diplomats from across the African continent, aviation professionals, and key government officials, all gathered under the theme of elevating Liberia’s air transport sector and showcasing its potential to contribute meaningfully to national progress.
Call to declare Liberia’s aviation sector a national emergency
In his keynote address, Minister Tyler passionately called on His Excellency President Joseph Nyuma Boakai to declare Liberia’s aviation sector a national emergency, citing the urgent need for investment, modernisation, and strategic development.
“Aviation is not just about planes and airports. It is about connectivity, trade, tourism, and national security. If we invest in aviation, we are investing in Liberia’s future,” Minister Tyler stated. “Declaring aviation a national emergency will fast-track development initiatives and position Liberia as a major aviation hub not only in West Africa but across the continent and beyond.”
Vision for Strategic Development
Minister Tyler stressed that strategic investment in airport infrastructure, human capital, safety standards, and regulatory frameworks will attract international airlines, boost domestic travel, and unlock new economic corridors. He underscored that improved aviation can transform Liberia’s image, drive tourism, enhance foreign direct investment, and promote regional integration.
Strong Support from Stakeholders
The Minister’s bold appeal to the President received a resounding response from attendees, many of whom echoed the need for urgent reform and modernisation in Liberia’s air transport system. Several African diplomats present commended Liberia’s commitment to aviation and pledged support for regional collaboration.

The Aviation Awareness Week, spearheaded by the LCAA, is intended to engage stakeholders, raise public awareness about aviation’s role in development, and inspire young Liberians to pursue careers in the aviation industry.
