Following the Cabinet meeting of 25 March 2026 and the Special Cabinet meeting of 1 April 2026, Cabinet has approved the publication of the draft National Airports Development Plan (NADP) for public comment.
The NADP is a national planning framework developed by the Department of Transport to guide the coordinated development, expansion, and long-term sustainability of South Africa’s airport network. It provides a strategic, system-wide approach to airport infrastructure planning, ensuring alignment with national transport, economic, and spatial development priorities.
The plan is intended to ensure that airport development is demand-driven, integrated, and coordinated, preventing unplanned expansion while maximising socio-economic returns from aviation infrastructure.
The NADP further aims to establish an integrated and strategic network of airports to support economic growth, logistics, tourism, and job creation. It will guide both overall network planning and the development of individual airports within their broader spatial and land-use context.
Members of the public are invited to submit written comments on the draft plan, which is available on the government website here: https://www.gov.za/sites/default/files/gcis_document/202604/54520gen3893.pdf
