TCS and Rolls-Royce Achieve Breakthrough in Hydrogen-Powered Aviation

Tests validate that 100% hydrogen propulsion can power an aeroplane engine, bringing hydrogen-powered flight closer to reality.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Rolls-Royce have announced a milestone in hydrogen propulsion development, successfully demonstrating a modern aero gas turbine running on 100% hydrogen through a complete simulated flight cycle, covering take-off, cruise and landing.

The demonstration marks the culmination of a four-year hydrogen demonstrator programme, originally launched by Rolls-Royce and easyJet in 2022, with TCS joining as an engineering partner in 2024. The test validated hydrogen propulsion technologies across combustion, fuel systems and engine controls.

The test is the culmination of a four-year programme to prove hydrogen’s potential as a future aviation fuel. Operated using 100% hydrogen, the modified engine successfully completed a flight cycle demonstration, including take-off, cruise and landing.

TCS supported Rolls-Royce across fuel system integration, engine controls work, hydrogen combustion analysis, test preparation and validation, data analytics, risk management and detailed design engineering.

Adam Newman, Chief Engineer for Rolls-Royce’s Hydrogen Demonstrator Programme, described the milestone as an important step toward more sustainable aviation, saying the rigorous, staged testing programme had given the team valuable insight into how hydrogen behaves inside a modern gas turbine across a complete flight cycle.

Anupam Singhal, President – Manufacturing at TCS, said the achievement reflected what was possible when advanced engineering was combined with digital capability and close collaboration across the wider programme ecosystem.

The programme also involves easyJet, NASA and the UK Health and Safety Executive, among other industry partners. Aviation currently accounts for an estimated 2–3% of global CO₂ emissions, and hydrogen propulsion is regarded as a potential route to eliminating in-flight emissions if the technology can be developed and deployed at scale.
