Cabinet Secretary for Defence Soipan Tuya said the modernised MD500 helicopters would enhance the Kenya Defence Forces’ capabilities in reconnaissance, aerial support, mobility and critical security operations. The Chief of the Defence Forces, General Charles Kahariri, said the three-country partnership provides a foundation for enhanced security cooperation and that the new capabilities would support security, counter-terrorism, peace support operations and humanitarian assistance.

The Kenya Army Commander, Lieutenant General David Keter, thanked the Republic of Korea for its support and the United States Government for providing the technical expertise needed to install the digital systems on the aircraft. Ambassador Kang Hyung-shik of the Republic of Korea said the transfer of military equipment reflects mutual trust and a shared commitment to regional peace and stability.

Susan Burns, Chargé d’Affaires of the United States, said modernised equipment and international cooperation strengthen Kenya’s role as a security partner, from counter-terrorism in East Africa to peacekeeping missions abroad. Brigadier General Jayson Becker, Deputy Commanding Officer of the Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa, said the helicopters, their technical support, training and Kenya’s investment in human capital would strengthen capabilities to address complex security challenges in East Africa and beyond.
