South Africa’s National Department of Transport has advertised a senior position within its Civil Aviation branch, with applications closing on 29 May 2026.
The post, referenced as DOT/HRM/2026/21, carries an all-inclusive salary package of R1,266,714 per annum, of which 30% may be structured according to the successful candidate’s individual needs.
The department is seeking a candidate with an NQF Level 7 qualification, as recognised by SAQA, in Transport and Logistics Management, Transport Management, Transport Economics or Public Administration. Applicants must also have a minimum of five years’ working experience at middle or senior managerial level in the aviation sector.
The role requires a strong understanding of the global and regional aviation landscape, including the contribution of aviation to South Africa’s national economy. The successful candidate will also need a thorough understanding of the international civil aviation system and the role of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
Regional aviation knowledge is also emphasised in the requirements. The department notes that candidates should understand regional initiatives and organisations, including the African Union, the New Partnership for Africa’s Development, the African Civil Aviation Commission, the SADC Civil Aviation Committee and the SADC Aviation Safety Organisation.
Key duties include maintaining and enhancing South Africa’s position on bilateral air transport, managing aspects relating to licensing and permits, safety and security, and participating in project teams to support a multidisciplinary approach to meeting departmental and national objectives. The successful candidate will also be responsible for managing the resources of the directorate.
The required skills profile includes negotiation, problem-solving, report writing, strategic capability and leadership, financial management, people management and empowerment, programme and project management, communication, client orientation and customer focus.
