Supporting the Human Side of Aviation: Mayday-SA Calls for Peer Volunteers

Mayday-SA invites experienced aviation professionals to join its confidential peer support network, strengthening mental health support across the aviation industry.

Aviation professionals are trained to manage high-pressure situations and emergencies in the air. Pilots, engineers and other aviation specialists operate in an environment where precision, resilience and professionalism are essential. Yet some of the most difficult moments in aviation often occur after the event — when individuals must process the emotional impact of critical incidents or personal challenges.

Recognising the importance of supporting the people behind the profession, Mayday-SA provides confidential peer support to aviation professionals who may be navigating difficult experiences in their careers or personal lives.

The programme is built on a simple but powerful idea: sometimes the person best placed to support an aviation professional is another aviation professional who understands the realities of the industry.

Mayday-SA’s peer support network consists of trained volunteers from across the aviation community who offer confidential, non-judgemental support to colleagues. Peer support does not replace professional counselling services but rather provides an additional layer of support — often serving as an early intervention where individuals can speak openly with someone who shares their professional context.

To strengthen this support network, Mayday-SA is currently inviting experienced aviation professionals to apply to become volunteer peer supporters. Individuals from across the aviation community are encouraged to apply, including pilots, maintenance and engineering professionals, recreational and paragliding members, and those involved in general aviation.

Prospective volunteers should meet the following criteria:

Mayday-SA
  • Minimum of five years’ experience in the aviation industry
  • Preferably 27 years of age or older
  • Good listening skills, empathy and professionalism
  • Willingness to complete a three-day peer-support training programme on 3, 4 and 5 September 2026
  • Commitment to confidentiality

No formal counselling qualifications are required. However, applicants should have a genuine interest in supporting their peers and contributing to a culture of care within the aviation community.

Applications are open until Thursday, 30 April 2026. Aviation professionals interested in becoming part of the Mayday-SA peer volunteer network are invited to submit the following information to az.gro.as-yadyamobfsctd-950408@seiriuqne.lareneg:

  • Name and contact details
  • Licence type or aviation role
  • Aviation experience
  • A short motivation for becoming a peer volunteer
  • Any relevant experience or skills

Following a selection process, shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview.

Through initiatives like this, Mayday-SA continues to strengthen the human side of aviation — ensuring that when aviation professionals face difficult moments, they do not have to face them alone.
