Growth in flight training is often measured in aircraft numbers, but the more important story lies in what those numbers represent. Excellentia Airline Academy’s expanding use of the South African-built Sling Next Generation Trainer (NGT) reflects not only the group’s ambitions but also broader confidence in South African pilot training and the sustained demand for pilots.

Following the acquisition of Aeronav Academy and Skyhawk Aviation, Excellentia now operates three Approved Training Organisations (ATOs) across Lanseria and Grand Central airports. The footprint offers more than scale. It enables exposure to varied operating conditions while reinforcing the organisation’s position in the pilot training segment.

Excellentia currently operates a fleet of approximately 30 aircraft, including five Sling NGTs, and intends to introduce a further 70 Sling aircraft as part of a broader plan to reach 100 aircraft within the next 18 months. In any market, this represents a material fleet increase. Within the South African training environment, it signals a clear growth strategy.

The Sling 2 NGT aircraft, combines modern training capability with a locally developed platform. Equipped with Garmin avionics and powered by the Rotax 912 iS engine, it provides a contemporary cockpit environment aligned with current training requirements. At the same time, it supports Excellentia’s move towards a more standardised and scalable fleet structure, which is critical for operational consistency as the organisation expands.

Sling has established itself as one of South Africa’s more recognisable aviation manufacturing success stories, and its growing presence within the ATO environment reinforces confidence in local design and production capability. In a sector dominated by imported platforms, scaling around a South African-built aircraft is a significant move.

Demand for pilots continues to drive investment in training infrastructure, and expansion at this scale reflects confidence in both near- and long-term market conditions. For the wider aviation ecosystem, it supports the training pipeline required to sustain airline growth.

For students, increased fleet size translates into greater training capacity, improved aircraft availability, and more flexible scheduling around weather and maintenance. Operations across both Lanseria and Grand Central also provide exposure to different operational environments, supporting progression into commercial aviation. Excellentia’s positioning in both local and international training markets further integrates the organisation into a globally connected training ecosystem.

Fleet growth must be supported by human capital, and Excellentia is actively recruiting, particularly for operations controllers and South African-rated flight instructors.

Excellentia’s expansion reflects demand for pilot training and the corresponding investment in aircraft required to support that growth.
