Hartzell Engine Tech, a Signia Aerospace Company and a trusted manufacturer of components for general aviation and military markets, has acquired E-MAG, a producer of electronic ignition systems for aircraft.

E-MAG produces lightweight electronic ignition systems that offer enhanced reliability, longer engine life, improved starting, and smoother idle and partial throttle performance. Factory options for E-MAG systems are available from Lycoming, Continental Titan, and Superior Air Parts.

Certification Plans and Market Strategy

Hartzell Engine Tech intends to guide E-MAG products towards certification for the general aviation market. This would enable the development of a certified electronic ignition system that serves as a direct replacement, requiring no external backup power or power conditioners for ongoing operation.

“While our traditional mechanical magnetos will remain in use for some time, Hartzell Engine Tech acquired E-MAG to expand the PowerUP Ignition System product range into both non-certified and certified markets,” said Hartzell Engine Tech President Keith Bagley. “The self-powering, plug-and-play nature of the E-MAG design will soon be available for straightforward dual installations in the certified market, as PMA products compatible with conventional aviation harnesses and spark plugs,” he continued.

Leadership Transition and Relocation

Brad Dement and Tom Carlson, E-MAG’s founders and co-owners, will support Hartzell Engine Tech through a transition period. Eventually, E-MAG’s manufacturing and support operations will move from Azle, Texas, to Hartzell Engine Tech’s main facility in Montgomery, Alabama.

Statements from E-MAG Founders

“We are pleased that E-MAG is becoming part of Hartzell Engine Tech and the Signia family of companies,” said Dement. Carlson added, “Hartzell Engine Tech’s expanded capabilities and resources will accelerate the E-MAG certification process.”
