On 30 April 2026, Zambia Airports Corporation Limited (ZACL) successfully conducted a Code 6 Emergency Response Exercise at the Domestic Passenger Terminal Building at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (KKIA) Terminal One, reaffirming its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety and security across its airport network.

The recent simulation was based on a hypothetical bomb threat scenario. While controlled, it reflected real-world risks that airports globally must be prepared for. The drill tested the airport’s ability to promptly detect, report and respond to potential security threats. It further assessed coordination among key response teams, including Aviation Security, Airport Police, Rescue and Fire Services, and Airport Management. The exercise also evaluated critical decision-making processes relating to evacuation, communication and access control.

Airports are among the most security-sensitive environments in the country. Every process that passengers experience, entry screening, baggage checks, restricted access areas, and boarding procedures, is designed to protect lives, infrastructure, and national airspace. These measures may at times appear stringent, but they are essential in preventing potential threats before they escalate.
For the travelling public, this highlights an important reality: airport safety is a shared responsibility.

Passengers and airport users play a key role by:

  • Complying with all screening and security procedures
  • Avoiding unattended luggage or items in public areas
  • Reporting any suspicious behaviour or objects to airport staff
  • Following instructions promptly during any emergency.

ZACL wishes to reassure the public that such simulations are routine and form part of international aviation safety requirements. They are conducted to continuously improve response capabilities, protect passengers, and maintain Zambia’s airports as safe and secure travel hubs.
