Tanzania’s Minister for Transport, Professor Makame Mbarawa, has directed the Tanzania National Roads Agency, the Tanzania Airports Authority and the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority to ensure the accelerated completion of remaining works at Msalato International Airport in Dodoma, with the objective of bringing the facility into operation by the end of May 2026.

The directive followed an inspection visit by the Minister to the airport construction site, where he reviewed progress across key project components, including the passenger terminal, runway and supporting aviation infrastructure. Authorities reported that construction of the passenger terminal has reached approximately two-thirds completion, while associated facilities such as the air traffic control tower, meteorological centre and airport fire station are advancing steadily. Runway works are reported to be nearing completion, with progress approaching full readiness, and the airfield has already accommodated aircraft movements during recent national events.

The Minister emphasised the importance of maintaining strict oversight of the contractor to ensure delivery in line with value-for-money principles and international quality standards. Particular attention was placed on finishing works within the passenger terminal, including interior installations, to ensure the facility meets operational and safety requirements ahead of commissioning. Outstanding activities include the delivery of airport rescue and firefighting vehicles and the final completion of the passenger terminal building. Once these elements are finalised, the airport is expected to be fully ready for operational use by the end of May 2026. The project is positioned as a strategic asset for Dodoma, with anticipated economic and social benefits for the capital region and the wider national economy.

TANROADS’ Dodoma Regional Office confirmed that enhanced supervision measures have been put in place to ensure the timely completion of the remaining works. Airport management further indicated that operational preparations are already underway, with personnel deployment planned in advance of the official opening. The Msalato International Airport project represents an investment exceeding TZS 370 billion and forms a key component of Tanzania’s broader aviation and transport infrastructure development strategy.
