Construction of the new Terminal 2 passenger building at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in Zanzibar has reached 90% completion, with the US$34 million project expected to be completed by 30 August 2026.
The Zanzibar Airports Authority (ZAA) said the terminal is designed to handle 1.4 million passengers annually. The latest progress was reported during an inspection of airport development projects by the authority’s board of directors on 22 August.
The board, led by chairman Juma Burhan, also inspected construction of a new aircraft apron intended to increase the airport’s capacity to accommodate growing aircraft and passenger volumes while improving safety and the efficiency of ground operations.
Construction of the apron has reached 25%, with completion scheduled for 1 August 2028.
Work is also continuing on a link bridge connecting Terminal 2 and Terminal 3. The project is 55% complete and is expected to be finished by 15 December 2026.
ZAA Director General Seif Abdalla Juma briefed the board on projects that have already been completed. These include refurbishment of Terminal 1 to serve heads of state, VIP passengers and private aviation operations, as well as construction of a commercial centre at Terminal 3.
The projects form part of the Zanzibar Government’s programme to expand and improve airport infrastructure as passenger and aircraft movements increase.
